Welcome to Cornell Law School!

We will be sending all admitted students an updated Fall Orientation Schedule later in June of 2008. Until then, here is a sample of a prior Fall Orientation Schedule for your review. Of course, any of the events listed here are subject to change, so this listing is for sample purposes only.

Our Orientation Program takes place in August. As this Program is mandatory for all new students, you must arrive at Cornell in August.

Hughes Hall, the law school’s primary residence hall, officially opens in August. For all those moving in, and for any other new students who will be in town early, we have scheduled some pre-orientation events to help you get settled quickly!

Once classes begin, important programs and events for new students will continue throughout the months of August and September.

PRE-ORIENTATION EVENTS

Join Assistant Dean John DeRosa for a walking tour of the beautiful Cornell campus. Along the way, learn some Cornell trivia and folklore. What is Dragon Day? Why are footprints painted on the Arts Quad? What exactly is a “chime master”?

Attending one of these group sessions is MANDATORY. You will learn about the computing and legal information services available at the law school.

Members of the Information Technology Staff will be available to help you access the LAN (local area network) and learn how to use its features. Get answers to all of your computer and network-related questions!

Saperston Student Lounge
Orientation starts tomorrow, and you have already learned a lot! Celebrate and enjoy some pizza with members of the Cornell Law Student Association (“CLSA”).

SCHEDULE OF ORIENTATION EVENTS

Saperston Student Lounge
Before or after registering, please join your new classmates for a casual breakfast.

Step One - Your First Assignments, Your Book Discussion Group and Your “Flex”
First-year class section lists, first class assignments and room assignments for a small section and book discussion meetings are posted in the glass-enclosed bulletin board across from the Saperston Student Lounge in Myron Taylor Hall on the ground level.

Check out the bulletin board, and then proceed down the hall to your right. Every student has an individual mail folder (we call them “Flexes”) located on the left side of the hallway past the staircase. Locate your Flex. There you will find an issue of SCOOPS (our weekly newsletter - this issue contains a list of initial assignments).

Step Two - Law School Registration/Photo
Report to the Foyer. To minimize lines, we ask that you arrive in the Foyer according to the following schedule:

In addition to checking you in, we will take your picture for our law school directory. Note - your picture will be available to all faculty and administrators, and will later be available to employers who visit the law school. No need to dress up, but please dress accordingly - no hats, t-shirts, etc.

Step Three - University Registration
Once you have completed law school registration, proceed immediately to the Berger Atrium. Staff will be on hand to formally register you as a Cornell University student. Your course schedule, ID cards, book and coat locker assignments will be available.

Auditorium, Anabel Taylor Hall (Adjoining Myron Taylor Hall) & Myron Hall Courtyard
Dean Schwab will be joined by Associate Deans Geiger, Holden-Smith and Lukingbeal to officially welcome you to Cornell Law School. Immediately following the Deans’ remarks, please proceed to the tent in our courtyard for lunch.

The first half of your tour will introduce you to Myron Taylor Hall and will be conducted by members of the CLSA. The second half will introduce you to the library and will be conducted by members of the library staff.

This event, hosted and sponsored by the CLSA, will introduce you to Collegetown - for decades, the social destination of choice for all Cornellians. Bring your I.D.

All new transfer students are invited to meet with Dean of Students Anne Lukingbeal and Assistant Dean John DeRosa. Refreshments will be provided.

Chosen for Cornell University’s 2005 campus-wide book reading project, Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart depicts tribal life before and after the coming of colonialism in Nigeria.

POST-ORIENTATION EVENTS

Meet in Law School Parking Lot

Join members of the faculty and administration and your fellow classmates for a walk through downtown Ithaca to beautiful Stewart Park on the tip of Cayuga Lake. Learn about Ithaca’s public interest legal community along the way, and enjoy great barbeque in the park. Sponsored by a national law firm, to benefit Ithaca’s Neighborhood Legal Services office.

By now, you have learned a lot about Cornell, but you may still have some questions about life as a law student. Ask away and then enjoy some refreshments!
