Charles Evans Hughes Scholarship

We are pleased to invite you to apply for Cornell Law School's most prestigious merit scholarship named in honor of Charles Evans Hughes, a former Cornell Law School faculty member and governor of New York State-a man of many talents. He was a philanthropist, politician, conservationist and educator. Throughout his career, Charles Hughes moved between the private and public sectors, holding office at the highest levels of state and federal government. He was an early 20th Century visionary…a lawyer in the best sense.

The Charles Evans Hughes Scholars (CEHS) program seeks to recognize a select number of incoming law students who have demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, public service, civic and social engagement.

For consideration, complete and submit:

  • Statement of Purpose - A one to two-page narrative in a format of your choice submitted as a Word or PDF attachment. The statement should include a narrative of your personal and professional aspirations and how being a CEHS scholar will help effectuate your goals; and
  • The Cornell Law School Scholarship Application.

Applicants for the Hughes Scholarship will not receive other merit consideration while their CEHS candidacy is being evaluated. Once a candidate is no longer under consideration, a merit scholarship review will automatically ensue and merit scholarship notifications will be sent accordingly.

The deadline to submit your CEHS application is Monday, February 26, 2018. CEHS finalists will be notified by email on Thursday, March 1, 2018. Finalists' interviews will be conducted on campus during our first Admitted Students' Day, March 22 - 23, 2018; travel stipends will be provided.

You may email your application to jdadmitted@cornell.edu, or submit by fax to 607-255-4656. You should reference CEHS Application in the subject line.
