Leo Martinez Visiting Professor of Law (Fall 2013)

Professional Biography

Leo P. Martinez is the Albert Abramson Professor of Law at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Professor Martinez received his B.S. from the University of Kansas, his M.S. from the University of Southern California, and his J.D. from Hastings where he graduated Order of the Coif, was a member of the Thurston Honor Society, and Managing Editor of the Hastings Law Journal. He began his legal career by meeting his military commitment as a member of the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, he has served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, and his private practice focused on tax issues with the San Francisco law firm of Howard Rice. He joined the Hastings faculty in 1985 and he served as Hastings’ Academic Dean for 12 years. He returned to full-time teaching in 2006 interrupted in the 2009-2010 academic year when he was asked by the Hastings Board of Directors to serve as the Acting Chancellor and Dean of the College. Professor Martinez has served academia and the profession throughout his career. He is the current President of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). He has served the AALS as a member of its Executive Committee (2008 – 2010), as the current co-chair of the AALS Resource Corps, as a member of the AALS Membership Review Committee (2003 – 2005), and as chair of AALS Insurance Law Section. He has served on the ABA Section on Legal Education Nominations Committee (2007 – 2010) and he has served or chaired nearly two dozen ABA law school site evaluation visits. He is a member of the American Law Institute (ALI), he is one of the academic Advisers on the ALI’s Principles of the Law of Liability Insurance project, and he is a member of the ABA Task Force on the Future of Legal Education. Outside of academia, Professor Martinez has been an active leader in public service. He has chaired the boards of four different non-profit organizations including Public Advocates, a San Francisco-based public interest law firm; the St. Francis Hospital Foundation; KQED, Inc. (now Northern California Public Broadcasting); and Public Radio Capital, an organization dedicated to broadening the reach of public broadcasting. He is a member of the board of CollegeTrack, a Bay Area-based organization that provides mentoring for high school students living in low-income and under-served areas ranging from New Orleans to Los Angeles to the Bay Area. Professor Martinez’s teaching has included contracts, federal tax, tax policy, tax procedure, and insurance law. He is the author of a leading casebook, Insurance Law (West Publishing 6th ed. 2010), and he is a an editor of the four-volume New Appleman Insurance Law and Practice Guide (Leo P. Martinez, Marc S. Mayerson & Douglas R. Richmond eds. LexisNexis 2013). He is also the author of many articles and book chapters on tax, insurance law, and legal education. Professor Martinez has been honored for his service to Hastings with the establishment of a $100,000 endowed scholarship that bears his name. The scholarship was endowed by alumni and friends of Professor Martinez. He was presented in 2011 with the annual Latino/a Law Professors Award by the Latino/a Law Professors Group in recognition of his “outstanding contributions to the Latino/a community in general and Latino/a law professors in particular.” Professor Martinez has also been recognized for his leadership in the legal and the public interest by Public Advocates with its highest award, the Voices of Conscience Award.
