“U.S., China, and North Korea: War or Peace?”
Gordon G. Chang, AB ’73, JD ’76
Author; Columnist, The Daily Beast
In volatile North Asia, four nuclear powers - North Korea, its traditional friends China and Russia, and the United States - confront one another.
For decades, there has been an uneasy peace on the Korean peninsula. Yet the reasons for that stability are disappearing. The regime in Pyongyang is increasingly shaky and therefore prone to taking risky actions. Moreover, Washington no longer believes it has the time to tolerate North Korea's weaponization.
Within, say, nine months, the North will be able to mate a nuclear warhead to a ballistic missle that will be able to hit anywhere in the American homeland.
Washington for decades has pursued misguided Korea policy, and now there are no good options.
