Cornell Law Writing Competition

2009 Writing Competition

The 2009 All Journal Writing Competition for first-year students at Cornell Law School was from May 12 to May 21.

Transfer students are invited to participate in a Transfer Writing Competition.  Participants have ten days to finish the competition and may begin any time between their acceptance to Cornell Law School and the first day of fall classes.  Transfer students will receive more information about the competition upon their acceptance.

General Information

The Writing Competition consists of a writing component and an editing component.  Both components are entirely closed and participants may not consult any outside sources.

For the writing component, the participant must write a “note” using the information from the research packet.  The research packet will consist of a variety of sources, such as cases, journal articles, and statutes.  There is no “question presented” or prompt in the packet; the participant is free to approach the problem from any angle.

The editing test is a sample of text peppered with a mix of citation and grammatical mistakes.  The test requires the participant to use the Bluebook and the Texas Manual of Usage and Style to correct as many mistakes as possible.  Materials (including editing symbols) beyond the Bluebook will be provided.

Participants need not be in Ithaca while participating in the competition.
