In computing, phishing is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. PayPal, eBay and online banks are common targets. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging and often directs users to enter details at a website, although phone contact has also been used Phishing is an example of social engineering techniques used to fool users.
A couple of examples that I recently received in my mail box included one that appeared to be from the IRS and another that appeared to come from a local bank which I did not have an account with. Both emails and website links looked exactly like the real deal, so how to you know? One way to fight back is to check email against a website called PhishTank. The website allows you to add a phish, verify a phish and is operated by the OpenDNS initiative. Beware of these kinds of malicious tricks and never give out personal information such as social security numbers, credit card numbers, or checking account numbers or you could find your accounts emptied out!
