Bernadette Stark JD '01 (née Crepso), was named one of the five Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly Diversity Heroes in January for her ''ability to rise well above any bigotry hurled [her] way'' by ''rejecting stereotypes of Latinas and lesbians. ''I look at it as an opportunity,'' Ms. Stark says of her ethnic background and sexual identity, ''to educate people, to see what a Latina can achieve, to see that a lesbian person can get married, have a child … I hope I'm a good example of what someone with my background can achieve.'' Ms. Stark is senior staff attorney at the Student Legal Services Office at UMass Amherst, where she handles cases involving family law, immigration, and landlord-tenant issues.
