Professional BiographyLarry Graev has, since December 2000, held the position of Chairman and CEO of The GlenRock Group, LLC, a firm that invests in private equity opportunities and provides management assistance to the leadership and boards of a variety of businesses. Larry has, since September 2007, also held the position of President and COO of GlenRock Capital Advisers, LLC, a registered investment adviser that acts as investment manager for institutional investors with respect to their private equity investment programs, primarily through investments in leading venture capital, buyout and other private equity funds managed by independent third parties.
Larry (a) sat on the Board of Directors of The Travelers Companies, Inc. from 2002 through 2013 and served as Chairman of its Compensation Committee, (b) sat on the Board of Managers of Focus Financial Partners, LLC and served as Chairman of its Compensation Committee from 2012 through 2017(an aggregator of RIAs and wealth management firms with approximately $200 billion in assets under management that was sold in a private equity-sponsored transaction in July 2017), (c) served as Chairman of the Board and was a principal investor in Pangea3, LLC from 2006 through 2010 (the leading India-based legal outsourcing firm that was sold to Thomson Reuters in 2010) and (d) is a Co-Founder and Managing Director and sits on the Board of Managers of ATW Resources, LLC, and its wholly-owned Swiss Subsidiary, Societe De L’Eau Aerienne Suisse, S.A.,(“SEAS”) (the leader in air to water generation technology with headquarters in Lugano, Switzerland).
Larry has been an Adjunct Professor of Venture Capital Law from 2007 through the present time, first at George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C. and currently at Fordham Law School in New York City. In addition, in January 2018, he began teaching as an Adjunct Professor of Venture Capital Law at Cornell University, teaching this course at the newly opened Cornell Tech Center on Roosevelt Island, N.Y.
Larry began his career with the international law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore, where he specialized in private equity, venture capital, corporate finance, mergers & acquisitions and securities law. He subsequently co-founded the law firm O’Sullivan Graev & Karabell, LLP, which also specialized in these areas. Larry served as Chairman and CEO of this firm for more than 25 years and under his leadership the firm grew from four to approximately 160 attorneys and it was recognized as a leading law firm in its practice areas. Larry left the full-time practice of law in 2001 to organize The GlenRock Group, LLC.
Throughout his career, Larry has been involved as an attorney, adviser and private investor (and in several cases an active senior executive) in a variety of private equity-related activities across multiple geographies, industries and stages of development. Larry is a recognized expert on both the legal and business aspects of private equity and venture capital investing and corporate governance. In the past, Larry has been an early investor in, and/or has sat on the Board of, the following companies—Lotus Development Corporation (application software), Blyth Industries, Inc. (candles), CoastAmerica Corporation (hardware distribution), Ab Initio Software Corporation (enterprise software), FoxMeyer Corporation (drug distribution) and International Surface Preparation Corporation (industrial machinery operating under the Wheelabrator brand), among others.
Larry earned his B.S. from Cornell University and his J.D. from George Washington University Law School.
