About Suzhou

The City of Suzhou

Suzhou, a city of just over 5 million inhabitants, is the historic silk capital of China, and lies about 1 hour's drive northwest of Shanghai. Forming part of the Yangtze River Delta area, the city has a rich history going back over 2,500 years. It is the home of Sun Zi, and the setting for his Art of War. European explorer Marco Polo called Suzhou "the Venice of China." The Chinese call it "Paradise on Earth." Students will make field trips to Chinese courts as well as to other Chinese institutions that provide further insights into the Chinese legal system. On their own, students will also have opportunities to visit Suzhou's famous scholars' gardens and cultural sites.

Bucerius Law School

Bucerius Law School is the first privately operated law school in Germany. It was founded in 2000 with the goal of offering prospective students an alternative to the usual legal education provided at German state universities. The main objective was to create an academically accomplished, practice-oriented, and bi-lingual legal education with a focus on international business law. The degree program lasts four years. Students have to attend legal language courses in Chinese, English, Russian, or Spanish. Lectures in business administration, and a diverse, obligatory general studies program are also part of the curriculum. In order to be better prepared for the demands of a global economy, students spend a significant part of their studies at one of the 81 affiliated universities all over the world, 28 of which are located in North America. Last summer 23 Bucerius students attended the Summer Law Institute in Suhzou. This summer Bucerius will also send students to the Institute and will be responsible for recruiting students from other European law schools.
