Professional Biography

Sanford U. Mba is a doctoral researcher at the Central European University (CEU), Budapest, Hungary, where he obtained a Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) in International Business Law. Prior to his postgraduate studies, and upon being called to the Nigerian Bar, he practiced with a leading business law firm in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital. While at the firm, he was exposed to transactional law practice, bordering on insolvency and corporate restructuring. He is dually qualified as a solicitor and advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Mr. Mba is researching the financing of distressed businesses in the context of corporate restructuring law. He compares approaches from the U.S., the U.K. and Germany, drawing lessons for frontier markets like his home jurisdiction, Nigeria. He is a CEU Global Teaching Fellow and has recently spent a semester teaching Business Law and Tort Law at the Mandalay University in Myanmar (Burma). Mr. Mba is a recipient of CEU’s full doctoral fellowship. He is also a recipient of the University of Benin scholar prize, where he graduated within the fifth percentile of his class. His (co-) authored articles have been published and accepted for publication by leading African law journals, including the Journal of African Law, as well as the African Journal of International and Comparative Law.
