Welcome to the Clarke Program in East Asian Law and Culture at Cornell Law School. It is an honor to direct a program that builds on Cornell Law School’s tradition of excellence in comparative legal studies and Cornell University’s renowned strengths in Asian Studies. Our program prepares Cornell law students for the complexities of international legal practice by providing them with a richer and more subtle understanding of Asian legal systems. It offers students, scholars, and lawyers working in government, private practice, and civil society a place for meaningful international dialogue. It aims to foster new levels of collaboration between legal scholars and scholars in other disciplines with interests in East Asian legal problems. The program also seeks to train a new generation of scholars in the United States and Asia in broad, humanistic approaches to the legal problems of East Asia. The pages that follow describe some of our current programs. I invite you to join us as we build one of the country’s most vibrant and intellectually engaged communities for East Asian scholarship.
