After more than seven months in ICE detention, a client of Cornell Law School’s Immigration Law & Advocacy Clinic (ILAC) has been released. Mr. S is a longtime Upstate New York resident and local business owner who has lived in the United States since he was eight years old. He was detained by ICE agents while dropping his grandchildren off at the school bus and held at the Buffalo Federal Detention Center. His case was handled through a collaboration between ILAC, including students Sahil Venkatesan and Carina Suarez, the National Immigration Habeas Institute, and the Kennedy Human Rights Center. The team filed a petition for habeas corpus, ultimately leading a federal judge to order Mr. S’s release.

A powerful example of how clinical legal education can make a direct difference in the lives of clients and communities.
