Biography
Edward McArdle, JD, HEC-C is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Bioethics and Humanities at the Center for Bioethics and Humanities, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and serves as an Ethics Consultant on the hospital’s Ethics Consultation Service. He is nationally certified as a Health Care Ethics Consultant (HEC-C).
Mr. McArdle is also an Adjunct Professor at Cornell Law School, where he teaches courses on bioethics and the law and on bioethics mediation of ethical dilemmas in health care. He is a past recipient of volunteer service awards from the Onondaga County and New York State bar associations for his role in creating a free legal assistance clinic serving two Syracuse-area hospitals.
Prior to joining the Center in 2019, Mr. McArdle served as an Assistant Attorney General with the Office of the New York State Attorney General, where his work included representing state agencies in treatment over objection and guardianship litigation. His research interests include medical treatment decision making at the end of life, medical aid in dying, disability rights, patient safe discharge issues, and medical error and malpractice.
In 2026, he has been interviewed on television and other media as an expert on medical mistakes and malpractice and about New York’s 2026 law legalizing medical aid in dying.
In August, 2026, he was invited to speak on the public radio show Radio Catskill to talk about New York’s new medical aid in dying law.
In July, 2026, he was a guest on the WCNY television show Cycles of Health as an expert on medical mistakes.
In April, 2026, he was a featured speaker on the SUNY Upstate Informed Patient podcast and on the WRVO radio show HealthLink On Air about New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act.
In the past year, Mr. McArdle has authored or coauthored academic articles on pediatric ethics, hospital safe discharge, and medical aid in dying. In July, 2026, an article explaining New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act on which he the lead author was released online by the New York State Bar Association. It will be published in an upcoming issue of the New York State Bar Association Health Law Journal.
He has also just completed writing the chapter on “Health Care Decision Making” for the upcoming 2027 edition of New York Elder Law Handbook published by the Practicing Law Institute.
