Biography
Gitanjali S. Gutierrez is a Senior Counsel with the ACLU Capital Punishment Project. Before joining the ACLU, Gitanjali was a Senior Attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights. She has engaged in litigation, advocacy, media engagement, and research on issues including unlawful detention, torture, the abuse of executive power, habeas corpus, capital punishment defense, international human rights, freedom of information, and accountability. Before joining CCR, Gutierrez was a Gibbons Fellow in Public Interest & Constitutional Law at the law firm of Gibbons, PC. Following her work at CCR, Gitanjali served as the first Information Commissioner for Bermuda for ten years, where she issued over 200 legal opinions.
Gitanjali holds a JD, magna cum laude, from Cornell Law School, and a BA in history and social justice from Bucknell University. She clerked for the Honorable Guido Calabresi, United States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit. She is currently an Adjunct Professor at Cornell Law School, where she assists Prof. Sandra Babcock in the International Human Rights Clinic.
