R. Thomas Godwin

Thomas Godwin is a professor of practice in the accounting area of the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management within the SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University. Godwin came to Cornell from Purdue University, where he was an assistant professor of accounting. He earned his PhD in accounting from Purdue and a master's and bachelor's degree in accounting from Clemson University. He is a licensed CPA in New York and South Carolina and holds a CGMA designation through the AICPA.

Prior to his time in academia, Godwin worked extensively in tax consulting and compliance for a national public accounting firm, primarily serving private equity firms. He has continued this work as a tax consultant and as an editor for the largest CPA review publisher nationally. His work has been published in Tax Notes, The Journal of Accountancy, and The Tax Adviser. At Cornell, Godwin teaches financial accounting, tax, and fraud courses for both undergraduate and graduate students. He is a co-director of Cornell LITLAP, with a specific focus on free tax compliance services for low-income taxpayers in the Tompkins County, NY, area. Godwin has won numerous college, university, and national awards for his research, teaching, and community engagement.
