Biography
Susan Emmenegger is a full professor of law and the director of the Institute of Banking Law at Bern University and former vice-dean and dean of the law school. She served on the advisory board to the Swiss government on financial policy and regulation, as board member and vice president of the Swiss Takeover Board and as board member of the Swiss Financial Markets Authority FINMA.
Professor Emmenegger's research focus is on contract law, legal methodology and financial markets law. She is the co-author of a textbook on Swiss contract law, a book on contractual remedies and a commentary on legal methodology. She has written extensively on contractual and regulatory aspects of banking law. She serves as the Co-Chair of a the Swiss Review of Business and Financial Markets Law and as board member of a leading educational law review.
Professor Emmenegger has a law degree, a Ph.D. degree and a habilitation from Fribourg University (Switzerland) as well as an honorary doctorate (Dr. h.c.) from the Vienna University of Economics and Business. She holds an LL.M. degree from Cornell Law School, where she was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, an associate editor of the Cornell International Law Journal and the winner of the J.D. moot court competition. She passed the New York bar and the Zurich bar and practiced law in both countries.
Professor Emmenegger has held teaching and/or research appointments at various universities, including the European University Institute in Florence, the Vienna University of Economics and Business, the Max-Planck-Institute (Hamburg), NYU Law School, and Cornell Law School.
