On April 8, members of the Women’s Law Coalition and the Cornell Law School community gathered in the Berger Atrium to honor Laura Underkuffler, J. DuPratt White Professor of Law, as the recipient of the 21st Annual Anne Lukingbeal Award. Established by the Women’s Law Coalition in 1999, the award is named after its first recipient, Associate Dean and Dean of Students Anne Lukingbeal.
Underkuffler was nominated for her commitment to women and advocacy for the rights of transgender students. Notably, she has also served as a faculty advisor for the Office of the Complainant’s Advisors.
“Professor Underkuffler is an inspiring presence to women in the Law School, especially to 1Ls who have few female doctrinal professors,” said Nathalie Greenfield ’20, “The support and encouragement she provides women in our community is invaluable.”
Upon receiving the news that she had been nominated, Underkuffler responded, “I was very surprised and grateful that students felt it appropriate to give me this award. Awards for academic papers or other similar things are important, but this award is more important because it is given by the students – who are the most important part of the Law School.”
At the ceremony, students shared their memories with Underkuffler on why they felt she was deserving of the award. “I felt very honored by what was said,” said Underkuffler, “It was a wonderful day.”
