What inspired you to pursue your J.D. at Cornell Law, and what made the school stand out to you?
I chose Cornell Law because of the incredible experience I had as an undergrad at Cornell. Despite being a large university, I have always felt that I had a community at Cornell, especially since my program (the ILR School) was smaller. That same feeling carried over to the Law School, where I had the opportunity to be a part of a smaller class, while still having the resources of a larger university.
How has your view of the legal field changed since starting your J.D. program?
I think going into law school, I didn’t realize how many different opportunities and avenues there were in the legal field. Much of my knowledge came from shows like “Suits,” but upon matriculating at Cornell, I realized that there’s so much to law beyond just a courtroom. I was able to explore more transactional opportunities through clubs and classes, which has become my passion within the legal world.
What has been a highlight of your Cornell Law experience so far, whether in the classroom, a clinic, or through student organizations?
A highlight undoubtedly has been getting to study at Cornell Tech. I’ve always been interested in technology and how that relates to law, so having the opportunity to spend a full semester in New York City getting immersed in that law has been incredible. I’ve been so fortunate to take classes from experts in tech law, including regular guest speakers from top firms, and to do that all in New York City has been special.
What area of law are you most interested in pursuing, and what sparked that interest?
I’m interested in pursuing corporate law, primarily transactional work such as mergers and acquisitions. For me, this was sparked by participating in the Business Law Society and taking the Business Organizations class with professor Dan Awrey. Although much of the 1L curriculum is litigation-focused, Cornell Law gave me opportunities to explore outside that, where I found my passion.
How do you think Cornell Law is preparing you for your future career?
By providing me with a fully rounded legal education. Beyond just the classroom, Cornell Law focuses on both my professional development, as well as opportunities to apply what I learned practically. I’ve been able to participate in the Entrepreneurship Clinic where I get to assist real clients and practice both applying the law and also communicating with clients. This will prove immensely helpful once I graduate law school.
What advice would you give to prospective J.D. students about making the most of their time here?
Honestly, my biggest piece of advice is to get involved! There are so many clubs and extracurricular events that give you the opportunity to get to know both your classmates and Ithaca better, and they’ve been highlights of my time here. There is a life outside of the classroom, and I think a legal education is not complete without partaking in said events.
When you are not studying or in class, what is your favorite way to unwind or enjoy life in Ithaca?
Going to Cornell hockey games is definitely one of my favorite things! The team has been great these past few years, and it really brings me into the school spirit. It’s also a great way to watch live sports, which is one of my favorite things to do back home.
