The center will both broaden the Entrepreneurship Law Clinic’s existing Ithaca work and give law students who choose to spend a semester at Cornell Tech an opportunity to work with clients in the New York City area — a first for the law school’s Cornell Tech curriculum.
About the Center
The Blassberg-Rice Center’s first priority will be the expansion of the five-year-old Entrepreneurship Law Clinic based at the Ithaca campus. Currently, students in the clinic assist Ithaca-area startups with a wide range of free transactional legal services, counseling clients on everything from branding to commercial contracts, data privacy, employment, equity allocation, founders’ agreements, intellectual property, marketing, negotiations and, during the pandemic, COVID-19 protocols for businesses and employees.
Students participating in the J.D. semester at Cornell Tech will be able to apply to work in the Blassberg-Rice Center to assist clients based in New York City, expanding access for both student and client participation.
Entrepreneurship Law Clinic
Students in the Entrepreneurship Law Clinic represent entrepreneurs and startups who are not yet ready or able to engage paid legal counsel, but who need assistance setting the legal foundation for their businesses.
Timeline
- March 2023: Center announced
- June 2023: Space selection and design begins
- August 2023: Hiring process begins for both Ithaca and Cornell Tech positions
- July 2024: New hires begin work
- August 2024: Center expands Ithaca operations and starts first cohort at Cornell Tech
